Formula BMW is the world’s leading entry-level category in Formula racing; the initial step for serious karters into the world of single-seater racing, and will be held in Germany, Great Britain, Asia and the USA this season. The series not only caters for those aiming at the championship, but also to rookies interested in the sport, in open-wheel racing allowing them to vie for the Rookies Cup. This series give budding drivers, as young as 15 years of age, the opportunity of piercing into the world of motor sports with the high-tech, standard FB02 race car.
The BMW racing car has been in the motor sports arena dating back to 2003 together with MAL, and has set the benchmark for other FB02 race cars, especially on the safety and technology front. The single-seater car, propelled by a 140bhp BMW engine has speeds reaching 230kph, with safety requirements surpassing its class, with the HANS safety system being a mandatory requirement. On top of this, BMW Motorsport has also developed the Formula Rescue Race Seat (FORS), especially for the series.
This season (2007), Formula BMW will be showcased as part of the Formula One support programme, and has been part of the FIA World Touring Car Championship numerous times.
The series also heads up a strong driver development program, offering a multifaceted Education & Coaching Programme, as well as an annual scholarship valued at US$50,000 to 6 of the most talented drivers through the Formula BMW Series worldwide.
